Egyptian Gyp
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Universal's official "remake" of its classic 1932 film takes more from Indiana Jones than from Boris Karloff, and doesn't do justice to either. Adventurer Rick O'Connell (Brendan Fraser) teams with librarian Evelyn (Rachel Weisz) and her "comic sidekick" brother Jonathan (John Hannah) to find a secret burial ground. Of course, all kinds of CGI beasties surface and wreak havoc, amidst feeble jokes and a blaring soundtrack. Director Stephen Sommers has a kind of soulless, leaden touch, with none of the sleek, sprightly fun this kind of movie requires. Of course, sequels followed: The Mummy Returns (2001) and The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor (2008)
