Space Truckers (1998)

Haul of Shame

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

This (comparatively) low-budget sci-fi flick is the latest from Stuart Gordon, who directed the great Re-Animator in 1985. Dennis Hopper is, yes, a space trucker, who is hired to carry some dangerous cargo to earth, and unwittingly becomes a hero. Debi Mazar and Stephen Dorff are his sidekicks. There are some, sick, funny, imaginative, and scary ideas in here (like square pigs genetically engineered so that they can be stacked), but we've all seen the basic outline before: independent spirit vs. corporate greed. And the editing is sloppy to cover up the budgetary restraints. Still, I can never put down the classic B-movie spirit, and I'm giving this one a pass, just for sheer audacity. Space Truckers played at the 1998 Dockers Classically Independent Film Festival at the Castro.
