The Thomas Crown Affair (1999)
Art and Trash
By Jeffrey M. Anderson As directed by John McTiernan (Die Hard) this remake of the 1968 Steve McQueen film looks expensive and luxurious but somehow still feels limp and sloppy. Pierce Brosnan takes over the McQueen role as a bored billionaire who becomes an art thief. Rene Russo plays a whip-smart insurance investigator with too much makeup as Brosnan's foil, and the only one who throws any gusto into the movie. Faye Dunaway, who had Russo's part in the original, has a small role here as a shrink and Denis Leary plays an ordinary detective in a refreshing departure from his usual typecasting as a wiseguy. The interesting thumpy, tappy piano score is by Bill Conti. This movie is basically a no-brainer, but has some intrigue and a healthy dose of seduction.
