Twice Upon a Yesterday (1999)
Second Chances
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Following in the footsteps of the alternate reality romance Sliding Doors, Twice Upon a Yesterday, directed by Spain's Maria Ripoll, is affecting and sweet, if slightly marred by its self-centered lead character. Douglas Henshall plays an egotistical actor who cheats on his psychiatrist girlfriend (Lena Headey) and gets dumped. He is granted a second go by two garbagemen named after characters from Don Quixote, but ends up instead with the unbelievably gorgeous Penelope Cruz (Belle Epoque). Ripoll makes a fine feature debut with a sparkling look and crisp pace. The underrated Elizabeth McGovern also stars as a mysterious bartender.
