Clothes Make the Man

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Were it a fiction film, this documentary about fashion designer Isaac Mizrahi might be compared to Godard. It crosses from black-and-white to color, uses jump cuts, slug footage and test film. It doesn't even really bother to delve that deeply into its subject. This is not an expose of the fashion world. Even someone who doesn't know anything about fashion isn't about to learn much here. Yet Mizrahi is such a flambouyant character that we are fascinated by him the whole time he is on camera. He is constantly saying something funny or interesting. He seems to have a natural comic timing, as do the editors of the film. In one scene, he is just about to give an important piece of information to his crew, about something he has cut from the show, when he becomes transfixed by a crossword puzzle, announcing the answers out loud. The fashion show itself is rather anti-climactic, but we do get to look at easy-on-the-eyes models such as Cindy Crawford, Naomi Campbell and Kate Moss.
