Voyage to the Beginning of the World (1997)
Directions
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
90-year-old Manoel De Oliveira's Voyage to the Beginning of the World is a lovely look at memories, the past, and endings. The great Italian actor Marcello Mastroianni, in his last role, is a movie director named Manoel working on location in Portugal. Both he and his lead actor, Alfonso (Jean-Yves Gautier), take trips into their pasts; Manoel emotionally, and Alfonso literally, as he visits his elderly aunt for the first time. It's slightly talky, but beautifully autumnal, oddly relaxing and very moving.
