The Picture of Disarray
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Directed by Brian Gilbert, Wilde is the story of the brilliant and witty playwright and his sexual obsessions. Stephen Fry is extraordinary as Oscar Wilde, but the movie lacks balance and finesse and comes across as a TV movie of the week. Jude Law as Wilde's lover Bosie is intolerable (which is really the fault of the screenplay), and we want less of him and more of Wilde. Vanessa Redgrave and others just as good are wasted in small roles. In the end, it's all just disturbing and lifeless.
