Akira Kurosawa's Dreams (1990)
Restless
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Akira Kurosawa's Dreams is less scrappy and more thoughtful than his more famous works, containing moments of great beauty as well as moments of painful awkwardness. Kurosawa's dream sequences are almost too literal to work all the time, but his views of nature in flux are still dazzling. Other sequences are far too obviously preachy with their heavy-handed, anti-war messages (featuring a ghost platoon and a nuclear power plant). Martin Scorsese appears as a very odd Van Gogh in one otherwise beautiful sequence. Steven Spielberg helped get the film released in U.S. theaters.
