Undercover Cowboy
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Screenwriter Robert Benton (Bonnie & Clyde, Superman) made his directorial debut with this smart, character-driven Western that plays a little like the undercover cop genre. A preening pacifist (Barry Brown) who tries to duck out on the Civil War gets robbed by rascal Jeff Bridges and winds up joining a gang of ineffectual bank robbers. Bridges learns to trust the newcomer more than his own partners, despite the fact that Brown has something to hide. If this movie were made today, the emphasis would be on chases and explosions, but Benton roots the story in the characters -- an idea that was not so unusual back in the 1970s. Paramount's widescreen DVD contains no extras.
