Bang the Drum Slowly (1973)
Catch It
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Robert De Niro stars as Bruce Pearson -- a not-too-bright catcher for a fictional New York team -- who is dying of Hodgkin's disease. Michael Moriarty plays his best friend, the pitcher who tries to make De Niro's last season a good one by keeping his disease a secret. Vincent Gardenia has a great supporting role as the team's manager who tries to figure out what's going on. It's a good film, avoiding all the obvious goop and the "big game" cliché at the climax. But characters' unquestioned goodwill is a bit troublesome and the film has a dreariness that's hard to shake. The disc comes with no extras.
