By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Unlike some of his collegaues, lesser-known Italian director Mario Monicelli was less conscious of art and more concerned with pure entertainment, and his heist comedy Big Deal on Madonna Street (1958, Criterion Collection, $29.95) proved to be just that. It was a runaway hit and even made a little splash here in the U.S. (it was nominated for an Oscar for Best Foreign Language film). Marcello Mastroianni joins a band of bumbling thieves who plan to break into a deserted house and drill through to the shop next door in order to rob its safe. But their plans keep getting ruined. The biggest catch comes when they find that the once-empty house is now occupied by two old ladies and a beautiful young woman.
