The Body Snatcher (1945)

3 1/2 Stars (out of 4)

Corpse of Action

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Loosely based on Robert Louis Stevenson's short story, The Body Snatcher marks the last onscreen teaming of Bela Lugosi and Boris Karloff, though Karloff has by far the bigger and showier role. Karloff plays Cabman John Gray, a sinister agent who delivers corpses to Dr. Wolfe 'Toddy' MacFarlane (Henry Daniell) for use in his classroom, until MacFarlane realizes something fishy is going on. This is the most elegant andleisurely of the Val Lewton horror films, up until the whopper of an ending! Lewton himself co-write the script under the pseudonym "Carlos Keith."
