In The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension, or Buckaroo Banzai for short, Peter Weller stars as the title character, a rock star, brain surgeon, stunt man, kung fu master, and all around super guy. His job, with the help of his talented crew, is to stop a mad scientist (John Lithgow) who has let bad guys from the 8th dimension into our world -- I think. There's so much going on here and so much fun to be had, I've never really been sure what the plot was. Ellen Barkin stars as Buckaroo's sexy love interest.
Shot in Cinemascope, the film has been butchered by horrible VHS pan-and-scan versions for too long. Now it appears letterboxed for the first time ever, and we can see the real thing. MGM/UA's DVD release comes with an alternate opening, deleted scenes, featurettes, a commentary track, a photo gallery, a trailer, and lots more.
The great screenwriter W.D. Richter (Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Big Trouble in Little China, Home for the Holidays) made his directorial debut on this, though he did not write it. Unfortunately for all of us, he has only directed one other movie to date.
