The Crime of Monsieur Lange (1936)
Publish & Perish
By Jeffrey M. Anderson The Crime of Monsieur Lange sounds like a film noir, but this is really one of director Jean Renoir's most delightful comedies -- one that vividly explores the theme "everyone has his reasons." Lange (Rene Lefevre) is a friendly and perfectly nice little dreamer who works for a publishing house and writes western stories in his spare time. When the greedy, selfish and hateful publisher "dies," the writer forms a collective and takes over the publishing house, ushering in a golden age for the company. But when the publisher turns up alive, he threatens everything that's been built. Is Monsieur Lange's crime justified?
