Plane Crazy
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Directed by Peter Weir, Fearless is shattering, powerful, and inspiring. It's a great film that never received as much notice as it deserved. I only saw it once, but it has remained vivid in my memory. Jeff Bridges plays Max Klein, a San Franciscan who survives a plane crash and goes through a phase in which he believes he should defy death as much as possible, tempting fate at the Wharf and on the rooftops in the financial district. Rosie Perez was nominated for an Oscar for her performance as Carla Rodrigo, a young mother who lost her child in the same crash. In one of the most powerful scenes, Max uses a car and a toolbox to demonstrate to Carla that she could not have possibly saved her child, no matter how tight she hung on. Isabella Rossellini co-stars as Max's wife. Rafael Yglesias wrote the screenplay, adapting his own novel.
