The Heartbreak Kid (1972)
May It to the Bone
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Elaine May directs this uncomfortable comedy with uncanny skill and intelligence, somehow magically balancing the story of a poor schmuck (Charles Grodin) who suddenly realizes he's married the wrong girl (Jeannie Berlin) when he falls madly for a blonde, man-eating goddess (Cybill Shepherd) -- during his honeymoon. (Like May's other films, it tells the story of a betrayal between a couple.) Using comedy, pathos and a hint of tragedy, May somehow coaxes us along with a sense of truth, and though the result may not exactly be a classic romantic comedy, it's certainly an outstanding movie.
