Majesty
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Director Tian Zhuangzhuang makes most of the rest of the Chinese Fifth Generation's output look shoddy with this beautiful, masterful film. The story centers around a thief named Norbu, who is cast out by his clan to wander alone with his wife and child. Yet the story itself is only a small part of this magnificent film. Tian also turns his camera on the beauty of the land and nature, and man's spiritual relationship with them. The Horse Thief appeared at teh 44th San Francisco International Film Festival. Editor (Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl) and director (Citizen Hong Kong) Ruby Yang presented it for the Indelible Images series. Famously, Martin Scorsese chose this film as the best he'd seen in the 1990s.
