The Lady Eve (1941)

4 Stars (out of 4)

Snake in the Grass

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Preston Sturges' The Lady Eve is an all-time classic with sharp-witted con-woman Jean Harrington (Barbara Stanwyck) giving the slightly baffled snake scientist Charles Pike (Henry Fonda) a run for his money. As usual with Sturges, you wonder how he was able to get away with so much innuendo during Hollywood's Hayes Code period. The Criterion Collection's remastered DVD stands up among their best (it contains lots of extras: a commentary track, an introduction by Peter Bogdanovich, the Lux radio play, Edith Head's costume designs, and more).
