Plan 9 from Outer Space (1959)
Somebody's Responsible
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Michael Medved and Harry Medved named it the "worst movie of all time" in their 1980 book "The Golden Turkey Awards," and that reputation stuck, but I genuinely like this one-of-a-kind sci-fi/horror movie. Writer/director Edward D. Wood Jr. apparently shot footage of Bela Lugosi just before the actor died in 1956 and somehow incorporated into his story of aliens attempting to take over the earth by resurrecting the dead. For all his famous technical ineptitude, Wood had his own unique vision and style; no other movies look or sound quite like his. Like the greatest cinema poets, he always managed to work in his own particular pet pleasures or concerns, and that odd, ear-bending dialogue is almost like a bizarre kind of open-verse poetry. DVD Details: Legend Films released the definitive Plan 9 from Outer Space DVD. It contains a beautiful, restored transfer of the film (too often seen in shoddy public domain editions), as well as a new, colorized edition. Mike Nelson (of "MST3K") provides a funny commentary track on both versions, and there's a subtitled "trivia track" on both versions as well. Nelson also reveals the mysterious "Plans 1-8." We also get deleted scenes (fake), some early Ed Wood TV commercials (real?) and some Ed Wood home movie footage.
