Shoot the Piano Player (1960)
Goodis Behavior
By Jeffrey M. Anderson It's sometimes hard to remember that Truffaut was just as influenced byHitchcock as he was by Renoir, and Shoot the Piano Player (1960)is the best example. Based on an American pulp novel by David Goodis, the film follows a former classical pianist now working at a dive barand becoming romantically involved with a waitress there. Just as thingsare starting to look up, his brother enters the picture with angrygangsters on his trail. Truffaut's take on the story is decidedly NewWave, and often feels like a Godard picture with its odd choices andstrange pacing. But it's also an affectionate tribute to the low-budgetcrime movies that Truffaut so loved, and it's one of my favoriteTruffaut films.
