Animators Max and Dave Fleischer were a serious threat to the Disney
empire at one point, but now they're almost footnotes, known only to
animation buffs. Among their other achievements, they invented an
incredible device called the "Stereo-optical process" which rotated
three-dimensional backgrounds behind the animated characters to give an
unprecedented depth to their films. This 2-disc DVD set collects 35
full-color cartoons, including a classic Betty Boop and a wonderful
holiday title, "Christmas Comes But Once a Year." The cartoons come from
public domain prints, but despite that, the quality is quite good. The
collection comes with a commentary track and a documentary.
