Doctor, Doctor
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Dan Aykroyd apparently wrote this (and Ghostbusters) for himself and John Belushi, but Chevy Chase ended up filling the role. (Dave Thomas, of Bob & Doug McKenzie fame, has a co-story credit.) Two outcasts, the brainy Austin Millbarge (Aykroyd) and the libidinous Emmett Fitz-Hume (Chase) are recruited to become decoy spies without their knowledge. With the help of a lady spy, Karen Boyer (Aykroyd's wife at the time Donna Dixon), they manage to narrowly escape WWIII. Director John Landis's unique rhythms are at play here, and there are many silly verbal and visual gags that still land. (Although, for a PG-rating, there sure is quite a bit of sex-related humor.) There are many cameos, a hallmark of Landis's, including filmmakers Joel Coen, Sam Raimi, Terry Gilliam, Ray Harryhausen, Michael Apted, Larry Cohen, Martin Brest, and Costa-Gavras, blues legend B.B. King, and Bob Hope (whose Road to films were said to be an inspiration for this). Paul McCartney's theme song, both stupid and irresistibly catchy, was a top ten hit.
