Asia Fantasia
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Tsui Hark co-wrote and produced this, one of the all-time great classic Hong Kong films. Jet Li stars (in one of his most playful roles) as a kind of Ming Dynasty playboy who falls for the deadly Asia the Invincible (Brigitte Lin). The plot is actually fairly complex, and lots of dazzling fight scenes follow. Ching Siu-Tung directs with astonishing clarity, speed and use of color. Stanley Tong is sometimes credited as co-director. The official U.S. release (The Legend of the Swordsman) is cut down to 99 minutes, so look for DVDs with the real title. The East Is Red: Swordsman III followed.
