San Francisco's Other Cinema has released this new DVD collection of videos by Animal Charm, a group comprised of Jim Fetterley and Rich Bott. Taking all kinds of videos, including industrials, cartoons and TV shows, the group mixes and repeats their imagery and crosses their soundtracks so as to "unscramble" the hidden messages. In other words, they make fun of the safety and conformity found in nearly every broadcast image. In one video, Marbles, they take the Bill Murray summer camp comedy Meatballs (1979) and re-imagine it as a testament to loneliness and despair. Both funny and disturbing, the videos tend to repeat images and sounds, ad nauseum, until the nerves begin to fray. For that reason, they might be better appreciated in a museum or art gallery setting than at home. The disc comes with 22 videos, and runs a total of 86 minutes.
