My New Gun
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
MGM/UA has finally unearthed this underrated Kathryn Bigelow gem, Blue Steel (1990, $14.95), starring Jamie Lee Curtis as a rookie cop in New York. During her first job, she shoots a burglar in a convenience store, but a slick broker (Ron Silver) steals the culprit's gun before anyone can find it. He begins courting her by daylight while going on a killing spree by night -- as Curtis gets deeper into trouble with the NYPD. Bigelow winds the proceedings up with a potent chase and shootout, during which we really feel the impact. Oliver Stone is credited as a co-producer. The DVD looks great but comes with only a trailer.
In 2023, Lionsgate released the film on Blu-ray for the first time, under their Vestron Collector's Series label. The visual transfer is luminous and the audio (2.0 DTS-HD Master) is crisp. Optional English, Spanish, and English SDH are provided. Bonuses include several attempts to re-evaluate the film in terms of its female power: a commentary track by film historian Alexandra Heller-Nicholas, an analysis by film historian Professor Jennifer Moorman (20 minutes), and a visual essay by film historian Chris O'Neill (13 minutes). Other extras include an interview with editor Lee Percy (11 minutes), an interview with production designer Toby Corbett (9 minutes), trailers and TV spots, a vintage promo, and a still gallery. It would have been nice to get some commentary from director Bigelow, but nonetheless, this is Highly Recommended.
