This Concludes Our Broadcast Day
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Unfortunately, more people paid attention to Jim Carrey's massive salary than they did to his astonishingly dark, needy performance in this bizarre and hilarious comedy directed by Ben Stiller. Carrey plays the title character who latches onto his latest customer (Matthew Broderick) and proceeds to worm his way into the latter's life. The film brilliantly constructs awkward situations that neither character can find ways to get out of and deftly plays with the bizarre nature of human relationships. What makes two people click, and what happens when only one clicks? Stiller appears in a recurring cameo -- and adds an extra layer of tension -- as a serial killer on television. It could be Carrey's finest work to date, and it's certainly Stiller's best work. Neither of his other two films as director, Reality Bites or Zoolander have the same sting.
