Josie and the Pussycats: The Complete Series (1970)
Long Tails and Ears for Hats
By Jeffrey M. Anderson This short-lived Hanna-Barbera animated TV series, which originated as a spin-off in "Archie" comics, is one of their most slapdash. In each episode, the pop band Josie and the Pussycats (consisting only of a guitar, drums and a tambourine!) arrive in some accidental location and foil some evil villain's plans to take over the world. The band's friends are mainly "Scooby-Doo" knockoffs (complete with Casey Kasem voicing a Shaggy-like character), with the exception of the conniving Alexandra (voiced by Sherry Alberoni), who essentially wants to be the center of attention. A cat called Sebastian provides the occasional Scooby-like comic relief. The writing focuses mainly on exposition, while the jokes and the animation are sub-par. Even the music, which I had assumed would be bubblegum pop, is more like a dated kind of dull quasi-soul. The 2001 live-action movie is one of my greatest guilty pleasures, and I had hoped the cartoon would be as much fun, but it's a real dud. Warner Home Video's two-disc set collects 16 half-hour episodes. One disc is one-sided and the other disc is two-sided. The main extra is a tribute to the cartoonist and illustrator Dan DeCarlo, who worked on "Archie" and created Josie and the Pussycats.
