Turning Over a New 'Thief'
By Jeffrey M. Anderson A classic John Woo title, Once a Thief (1991, Columbia/TriStar, $24.95), has been released in a nice, letterboxed transfer with clean subtitles -- though the actors sometimes don't sound like themselves, as if they were inexplicably dubbed in Chinese by other Chinese actors. Chow Yun Fat, the late Leslie Cheung and Cherie Chung star as a trio of adopted siblings and daring art thieves. It's lightweight Woo, but still contains a few dazzling sequences, as when Chow and Cheung use glasses of wine to maneuver though a field of invisible lasers.
