Green Days
By Jeffrey M. Anderson This bit of blarney depicts a sweet, silly love triangle in 1950s provincial Ireland. Robin Wright (Penn) stars as an independent, unwed mother who has become an outcast in her village. (The identity of the child's father remains unknown to everyone but her.) Meanwhile, a group of traveling players arrives in town, including the dashing Aidan Quinn, who immediately falls for the striking lass. Unfortunately, a burly policeman (Albert Finney) frowns on their budding relationship. Director Gillies MacKinnon (Hideous Kinky) keeps the proceedings light and sweet, painting with a swatch of open, green country and bracing, overcast air -- even if he fumbles silly plot devices like incorporating Othello literally and figuratively. DVD Details: MGM's disc comes mastered in stereo surround with an optional Spanish-language track, plus optional English, Spanish and French subtitles. It also comes with a trailer.
