Bored and sorcery
By Jeffrey M. Anderson Rather than make a third Conan the Barbarian movie, Dino De Laurentiis and company went deeper into pulp novelist Robert E. Howard's canon and came up with Red Sonja. It's a truly horrible concoction, filled with stiff, overly serious dialogue, wretched performances, bad lighting and a lazy score by the otherwise great Ennio Morricone. Brawny Brigitte Nielsen makes her debut in the title role and Arnold Schwarzenegger has a glorified cameo as a kind of helper -- though he appears much more prominent in the film's advertising. Sandahl Bergman co-stars as an evil queen, but most of the cast grates on your nerves. You know you've got something terrible when Schwarzenegger gives the best performance. Richard Fleischer (The Narrow Margin, Compulsion) directed. DVD Details: The new DVD is letterboxed in 2.35-to-1 widescreen and comes with a trailer.
