Ruth Rendell Mysteries (2005)
Armchair Detecting
By Jeffrey M. Anderson This two-disc DVD set includes two adventures of Detective Chief Inspector Wexford (George Baker) and his dutiful sidekick Detective Inspector Mike Burden (Christopher Ravenscroft). Both were produced for BBC television and both have that quiet, intelligent rainy-Sunday vibe. The first film Simisola (1996) is about a missing girl and the racism that unexpectedly crops up during the search for her, and Road Rage (1998) is a timely story of eco-terrorism. Simisola runs about 103 minutes and Road Rage clocks in at an epic 197 minutes. Ruth Rendell's stories have mostly been adapted into feature films overseas, notably Claude Chabrol's La Cérémonie (1995), Pedro Almodovar's Live Flesh (1997) and Claude Miller's Alias Betty (2001).
