What's New?
By Jeffrey M. Anderson The Welsh-born singer best known for his boisterous renditions of "What's New Pussycat" and "It's Not Unusual" hosted his own television show for 57 episodes between 1969 and 1971. This new DVD box set from Time Life collects eight choice episodes featuring guest stars like Richard Pryor, Peter Sellers, The Who, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin and Stevie Wonder. Jones sings amusing, almost mismatched, duets with some guests, such as Little Richard. While he's a surprisingly gracious host with a warm, amiable camera presence, and his singing is strong and bold, he's not a particularly visual performer -- at least not on camera. His dancing leaves a lot to be desired. But the energy and sound quality of these shows, plus the bizarre, quasi-psychedelic presentation makes it a curio worth seeking out. Jones provides new introductions for each episode.
