Welcome to the Grindhouse Double Features (2007)
Same Old Grind
By Jeffrey M. Anderson These two DVDs prove that it's sometimes better to reminisce than to re-experience the past. Each disc includes a double feature of vintage "grindhouse" features, plus trailers and those swirly, colorful leaders that say "prevues of coming attractions" and "feature presentation." The whole package has a unique feel, and the trailers are amazing -- they generally promise more than the actual films deliver. But the four full-length films, Pick-up (1975) and The Teacher (1974) on one disc, and Black Candles (1982) and Evil Eye (1974) on the other, are quiteawful. Pick-up has its interesting moments (best seen in the trailer)and Black Candles features all kinds of bizarre sex scenes, but themildly curious are warned to approach with caution.
