Open Up... It's the Pigs

This hilarious show came to the US via MTV in the early 80s, and introduced viewers to an entirely new level of laughter. Sharing a house, four poor, rude, stupid British college students -- punk Vyvyan (Adrian Edmondson), uptight Rick (Rik Mayall), hippie Neil (Nigel Planer), and leader Mike (Christopher Ryan) -- bicker with each other. Alexei Sayle is a frequent co-star. Occasionally a cool band -- like Madness or Motorhead -- comes to play. This essential box set contains an earlier version of the series, which aired on the BBC in 1982, and to my knowledge, never hit American airwaves. The three-disc box set (1982-84, BBC/Warners, $59.98) contains 12 episodes, featurettes and other extras. Look for Emma Thompson, Robbie Coltrane, Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie, Dawn French and Jennifer Saunders in small roles.
