The Animatrix (2003)

3 Stars (out of 4)

Beyond the Matrix

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

The eagerly awaited Animatrix collection, containing nine animated short films set in and around Andy and Larry Wachowski's complicated Matrix universe, was released straight to DVD in 2003. Overall, it's far more interesting than the new Matrix Reloaded, though some of the shorts are stronger than others. One highlight that has already been shown in theaters (along with the flop Dreamcatcher) is The Final Flight of the Osiris, a computer-generated action quickie that ties in with the new feature film. Another tie-in is The Kid, about a lonely soul who finds his own way out of The Matrix by telepathically connecting with Neo. World Record, about a runner who breaks through the program, and Beyond, about a bug in the Matrix system, are excellent as well. The disc also comes with loads of extras and interviews with the filmmakers, many of whom are veterans of Japanese anime.
