Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992)
Oceans of Time
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Dracula appeared in many films before 1992, but Francis Ford Coppola's film is the first official adaptation of Bram Stoker's novel. (F.W. Murnau did not credit Stoker on his Nosferatu, and Tod Browning's 1931 film was based on a play.) Coppola's period piece goes big with dazzling costumes, sets, and silent movie techniques to punctuate the story.
Gary Oldman plays an overdressed, over-affected Dracula. Winona Ryder is a standout as the object of his affection, and wife to Jonathan Harker (a miscast Keanu Reeves). Anthony Hopkins plays the vampire hunter Van Helsing. Like many of Coppola's late-period films, it's gorgeous but overly long and emotionally empty. It won three Oscars, for Costume, Sound Effects Editing, and Makeup.
