Perfect Girl
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Michael Almereyda wrote the screenplay for this post-apocalyptic sci-fi movie that sounds sexier than it really is. Sam Treadwell (David Andrews) owns a sexy "Cherry 2000" female robot who serves as his wife (Pamela Gidley). While trying to have sex with her in soapy water, she short circuits. Sam loves her, so he tries to get her fixed but he finds out that she's a special edition and a replacement is rare. He must venture out into the dangerous wasteland to find one, and for that he needs to hire tough girl E. Johnson (Melanie Griffith) to be his guide. Of course, they meet the usual bands of outlaws and weirdos, and of course — not to give anything away — Sam learns about true love. The movie has a few weird, cool set designs using grungy, pastel colors, but a large portion of it shows its low-budget seams. Laurence Fishburne appears early in the story as a kind of sex lawyer who barters deals between prospective couples. The cast also includes cult stars and character actors like Harry Carey Jr., Brion James, Ben Johnson, and Tim Thomerson. Basil Poledouris composed the terrific score. Kino Lorber released it on Blu-ray in 2015; it includes a commentary track by director Steve De Jarnatt (moderated by film critic Walter Chaw), an interview with Thomerson, a making-of featurette, and trailers.
