Chucky Breaks

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Sure, it's a quickie sequel to a slasher movie, and it was critically decimated in its day, but Child's Play 2 really isn't bad. The company that manufactures the Chucky dolls is trying to put a spin on the murder spree; they re-assemble killer Chucky doll, which immediately results in another gruesome death. Andy (Alex Vincent) is now in foster care, taken in by Joanne (Jenny Agutter) and Phil Simpson (Gerrit Graham). He bonds with their other foster child, teen Kyle (Christine Elise). Chucky moves in, taking the place of another Chucky doll and tries to kill Andy once again. Directed by John Lafia, a writer on the original Child's Play, the film is surprisingly well-shot with all kinds of strange angles and unsettling spaces, notably the toy factory where the climactic showdown takes place. (The bold colors neatly juxtapose the grisly violence.) Grace Zabriskie plays a woman at the foster care center, and Greg Germann ("bygones") plays a toy company lackey. The Kyle character returned on the Chucky TV series in 2021.
