John Wayne Westerns Film Collection (2015)

4 Stars (out of 4)

Sir Duke

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Warner Home Video has released this five-disc Blu-ray set of John Wayne titles, highlighting two new catalog releases, The Train Robbers (1973) and Cahill: United States Marshal (1973). These are both decidedly minor, but mildly entertaining late Wayne vehicles, the former a lighthearted affair from Burt Kennedy (featuring a lovely Ann-Margaret) and the latter a more serious effort. However, the two films really begin to look like filler compared to the three masterworks in the package: John Ford's Fort Apache (1948), Ford's The Searchers (1956), and Howard Hawks's Rio Bravo (1959). These three discs are from previous issues, and come, more or less, with the same extras (but without any bonus discs). As a Wayne fan without any of these movies in high-def, I was grateful for this release, and am making it a permanent addition to my library.
