Police Force
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
I used to read Joe Bob Briggs' column every week, and when he gave this movie a four-star rating, I checked it out. It had Bruce Campbell in it, whom I knew from the Evil Dead movies. And, like Evil Dead 2, Maniac Cop 2had a bigger budget, thanks to the success of its low-budget predecessor (Maniac Cop). The maniac cop (Robert Z'Dar) goes around killing women and cops and makes friends with a weird guy (Leo Rossi), a strangler who lives in a sewer. Campbell dies in the first 10 minutes, but Detective Lieutenant Sean McKinney (Robert Davi, with his pockmarked and scarred face), takes over, along with gorgeous police psychologist Susan Riley Claudia Christian). Michael Lerner is the Deputy Commissioner (and decorates a Christmas tree), Laurene Landon returns from the previous movie as Campbell's partner Mallory, and with Clarence Williams III and Charles Napier. It's a great, fast moving B-movie, with everything plus the kitchen sink thrown in. There's even a scene in a strip club, and a scene in which the maniac cop jumps out of a window on fire. Larry Cohen wrote the screenplay, and Jay Chattaway provided the score. Quentin Tarantino chose it as one of the "coolest movies of all time."
