Rom-Bomb
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
One of the stranger items to come out of the 1980s, this weird romantic thriller has the threat of nuclear annihilation looming over it; the takeaway is that it's somehow swooningly tragic. If it weren't so stuck in its particular era, it could be like Shakespeare. Anthony Edwards stars as a jazz musician, Harry Washello, who meets and immediately falls for Julie Peters (Mare Winningham). He's a romantic and believes that she's the one he's been searching for. After a successful date, they agree to meet later after she gets off work from a local all-night diner. But thanks to a weird set of circumstances, Harry oversleeps and misses her. He answers a ringing payphone and learns of a just-launched nuclear attack. The denizens at the diner, who happen to include a stylish woman with the right connections (Denise Crosby), decide to evacuate the city, but Harry decides he must find Julie first. Thus begins a frantic, all-night search with car crashes, run-ins with the police and other undesirables, a search for a pilot at a local gym, and a tangle with 1980s fashions. You simply won't believe the ending. Kino Lorber released Miracle Mile on Blu-ray in 2015, as they did director Steve De Jarnatt's previous cult film, Cherry 2000 (1987). It includes tons of extras for fans, including two commentary tracks, deleted scenes, a cast reunion, interviews, an alternate ending, and trailers.
