A Nightmare on Elm Street: The Dream Child (1989)

3 Stars (out of 4)

It's a Boy!

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

The fifth Freddy Krueger movie was decimated by critics in the summer of 1989, but that's what usually happened to slasher sequels. Truthfully, Freddy (Robert Englund) is no longer scary, merely posing and delivering wisecracks. But I thought the movie had a really good idea, and some incredible visuals and amazing production design (some of it was inspired by M.C. Escher). Lisa Wilcox returns from the fourth film as Alice, now pregnant. Freddy can torment her through the dreams of her unborn child, who, a doctor informs us, sleeps about 70% of the day. A soundtrack album was released with metal on one side (Bruce Dickinson, W.A.S.P., etc.) and hip-hop on the other (Whodini, Kool Moe Dee, etc.). I was lucky enough to be able to see this in a drive-in! (I could see Batman and The Abyss playing on screens behind me.)
