Rocky V (1990)

Sigh Five

By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Rocky V is the undisputed worst movie of the Rocky franchise, the one at the bottom of everyone's list. For some reason it was decided to re-hire original director John G. Avildsen and bring things "back to basics." After fighting Drago, Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) has brain damage and isn't allowed to fight again. That's extra bad news when Paulie makes mistake that costs the family their entire fortune. They must move back to their old 'hood, where son Robbie (Sage Stallone, Sylvester's real-life son, who passed away in 2012) must go to a rough school. He's immediately the target of bullies. Meanwhile, Rocky meets young fighter Tommy Gunn (Tommy Morrison) and begins training him in Mickey's old gym, neglecting his son in the process. (Burgess Meredith appears in a newly-filmed flashback.) It ends not with a pro fight in the ring, but with a street brawl. Rocky's sudden leap from apathy to enthusiasm over Tommy is just as weird and abrupt as Robbie's becoming a juvenile delinquent, and it's frustrating waiting for the two of them to do the obvious thing: talk. Many of the people who were nominated for Oscars for the original film received Razzie nominations for this one.
