Daymares
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
A forgotten psychological horror film, The Sender is better than it looks, especially given that its director, Roger Christian, went on to make the notorious Battlefield Earth. Kathryn Harrold stars as a pretty, kind nurse who becomes interested in a "Joe Doe" patient (Zeljko Ivanek), a man with no memory who tried to kill himself by filling his pockets with rocks and walking into a lake in a public park. She observes him breaking into her house and stealing a necklace, but it turns out the whole thing was an illusion; it eventually becomes apparent that John Doe's nightmares tend to manifest themselves in the real world. Oh, and the ghost of his mother keeps turning up, too. The movie is treated seriously, with decent special effects and acting, and it generates a fascinatingly eerie atmosphere. Paul Freeman (Belloq from Raiders of the Lost Ark) co-stars. Before becoming infamous, director Christian had been an art director and set decorator on films like the original Star Wars and Alien. Originally a Paramount release, The Sender was released on a fine-looking Blu-ray by Olive Films, with no extras.
