By Jeffrey M. Anderson

Russ Meyer was a filmmaker that knew what he was up to. He loved women. He loved women with huge breasts. And he especially loved women with huge breasts who would bare them for the camera. But he was also smart enough not to be just another maker of "nudie-cuties." He dealt with parody, social commentary, and even female empowerment. He was also a skilled filmmaker, often handling the writing, directing, producing, cinematography, and editing himself. Many cinephiles consider him one of the all-time best director/editors, for his swift, funny, and supremely odd rhythms. Additionally, he was a savvy businessman, controlling the rights and distribution for most of his own films.

That has changed since his death in 2004, and many of his films are hard to find in physical media. Thankfully Severin Films has taken the initiative and released three restored Meyer classics on Blu-ray for the first time, with more to come. They are the informal "Vixen" trilogy, unrelated to each other except for the word "Vixen" in their titles.

In Supervixens (1975), Clint Ramsey (Charles Pitt) works at a gas station and is, apparently, irresistible to several well-endowed women, all of whom have the word "Super" as part of their name. SuperLorna (Christina Cummings) pulls into the station and starts flirting with him, just as his aggressive, jealous wife SuperAngel (Shari Eubank) calls, demanding that he come home to satisfy her. They fight, and he goes to a bar, where the bartender is SuperHaji (Haji, from Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!).

Nasty cop Harry Sledge (Charles Napier) arrives at SuperAngel's after a nosy neighbor notifies the police. She tries to seduce him, and taunts him relentlessly when he fails to perform, so he kills her and prepares to pin the murder on Clint. Clint hits the road and encounters many more voluptuous ladies before meeting SuperVixen, also played by Eubank, who is like a kinder, more loving version of his wife. This is another Meyer film through and through, with zany cutting, and weird commentary throughout, but strangely funny and transfixing.

Bonuses include an archival commentary track by Meyer, interviews with Meyer and Napier, an episode of "The Incredibly Strange Film Show" with Meyer, a trailer and a TV spot. Recommended.
