Swing Operation
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Nobel Prize winner Kazuo Ishiguro, whose novels The Remains of the Day and Never Let Me Go have been adapted into movies, wrote the screenplay for Living, based on Akira Kurosawa's masterpiece Ikiru. Bill Nighy stars as the bureaucrat who, after an unremarkable life and career, learns that he is dying of stomach cancer. He befriends a former employee (Aimee Lou Wood) and decides that he's going to put every last bit of effort into cleaning up a toxic dump site and turn it into a playground. The film employs a clever flashback structure as Nighy's underlings piece together his story after the fact. It's a quiet, lovely, and touching film, even if it gets a little too goopy toward the end.
