Do-Over
By Jeffrey M. Anderson
Written by Danny Rubin and directed by Harold Ramis, Groundhog Day explores every possible reaction to this situation, from euphoria to depression to suicide to self-reflection. Bill Murray stars as a weatherman who lives the same day over and over, trapped in a wintry small town called Punxsutawney on Groundhog Day. Eventually, he begins to use his time to win over his pretty producer, Rita (Andie MacDowell), which is not easy since, to her, it all happens in one day.
Nearly every world religion from Buddhism to Catholicism has embraced the film as a perfect representation of its own ideals. Of course owning the film on DVD and watching it again and again comes fraught with its own ironies.
Chris Elliott co-stars as an intrepid cameraman, who must repeat most of his dialogue again and again, and Stephen Tobolowsky is an annoying insurance salesman. Murray's older brother Brian Doyle-Murray also appears.
In honor of Saturday being February 2, the great American comedy Groundhog Day has been re-released in a new Special Edition DVD. Columbia/TriStar's DVD release comes with a director commentary track, a making-of documentary, and seven subtitle options including Portuguese and Thai. Happy Groundhog Day!
